ABOUT MODELU
Modelu is an independent 3D scanning and 3D printing business based in Chipping Sodbury. We specialise in creating highly detailed model railway figures and diorama miniatures, using advanced 3D scanning alongside resin and full-colour 3D printing.
Every figure is based on a real person, captured in a natural pose and reproduced with exceptional precision, adding life, character and realism to layouts and dioramas of all kinds.
Modelu began in 2015, when our founder Alan Buttler set out to bring a new level of detail and authenticity to model railway layouts through 3D printing. With a background in IT and CAD design, and a long-standing passion for the hobby, he saw the potential of 3D scanning technology to transform the way miniature figures were made.
At a time when 3D scanning was limited and often out of reach for most hobbyists, Modelu quickly gained a reputation for precision and innovation. In 2017, we were proud to receive the Gwyn Humphreys Award for Innovation and later placed second in the British Model Railway Innovation Awards.
Today, Modelu Miniatures continues to serve modellers across the UK and beyond with a growing range of figures, accessories and collaborative projects. From heritage crews to everyday passengers, our catalogue includes a wide variety of poses and styles, all based on real people and scanned in-house using our full-body 3D scanner.
As the business has grown, so has our product offering. We’ve expanded into new areas with the launch of Modelu Studio, which creates personalised 3D figurines for individuals and families, and Modelu Military, which brings the same lifelike detail to military modelling and wargaming. Each branch of the business is united by a focus on accuracy, realism and a passion for miniature storytelling.
